When their bus driver had an episode due to a medical condition, the bus began to lose control, the boys sprung into action and managed to stop the bus. Vernon Brown, Emilio Stewart, and Alex Fischer all in eighth grade, are being lauded as heroes.
Alex was waiting to get off the bus when he noticed something was wrong with the driver and the bus was till moving at full speed. Alex called his friends for help.
“Yeah, it was really scary. I hit the brakes as fast as I could to stop bus. It was crazy. Bus driver was shaking,” Alex said.
Emilio and Vernon called 911 and helped Alex slow the bus down.
“I feel like a hero. I’m just glad I get to help somebody. Like this is crazy. I didn’t know we would get so much stuff. I’m actually proud of myself,” Vernon said.
The boys were awarded with $200 Gift Certificates from Missouri Central Bus. They each also received $500 savings bonds.
“I feel amazing. I never expected this to happen. I’m just glad things went well, because they could have escalated,” Emilio said.
The boys were also given a heroes welcome by St. Louis County police, Affton firefighters, and the St. Louis City Council.
“It’s a happy day for me. I’m glad my family came out,” Alex said.
