CAPE TOWN – A man has been shot dead in a shootout between gangsters and police in Bishop Lavis.
The shooting broke out during an abalone bust at the weekend.
At least R8 million in perlemoen was seized.
The police’s Frederick van Wyk says: “During this operation, officers were attacked by gang members. Later, shots were fired at police members and a 44-year-old man was caught in the crossfire. The community started burning tyres, closing the bridge at Robert Sobukwe Drive.”
Independent Police Investigative Directorate has taken over the investigation.
