Two SAPS cops have been convicted of raping two teen girls in the back of their police van in the Northern Cape.
The two, a 42-year-old Warrant officer Edgar Nero and 21-year-old Constable Thuto Shupping Motoa appeared in the Postmasburg Regional Court where they were both convicted and sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment and suspended for five (5) years in service, they were declared unfit to possess fire arms, their names were added to the National Register for sex offenders.
IPID spokesperson Moses Dhlamini confirmed the conviction and sentencing of the two and commended the job well done by the prosecutors.
Allegations were that the two officers who at that time were driving a marked police Isuzu double cab stopped and offered a lift to the girls while they were walking home just after sunset. Less than a kilometre into the journey the two cops had allegedly proposed love to the teen girls but to no avail. Nero, who was driving, stopped on a dark spot and asked Motoa to take over while he and one of the girls went and sat at the back of the van.
It is at this stage that Nero is alleged to have forced himself onto the girl raping her once. Motoa on hearing what was going on at the back of the van, stopped the van and started touching the other girl on her thighs before he forcibly undressed her and raped her once also.
The two cops are alleged to have offered the girls R2 each for them to keep quiet going to the extend of showing the girls their empty wallets to prove they didn’t have money. The two coins actually came from Motoa’s wallet who offered to give them more after they got paid.
The victims reported their ordeal to Saps Postmasburg the following morning leading to the investigation.
The Investigative Directorate said the matter was thoroughly investigated and led to the arrest of the accused policemen who later appeared in court where they faced charged of rape.
