Drug addicts have been robbing women of their weaves in Durban recently.
Women wearing weaves now worry about the growing trend in Durban streets.
This past week a woman was robbed of her wig leaving her bold head uncovered. She had to buy a duke to cover it.
Hotspots are Joe Slovo (Field st) and Dr Pixley KaSeme (West st) These addicts can be seen standing on the roadside waiting to pounce.
A woman, Precious Khumalo, who works in a nearby saloon confirmed that hardly a day would pass without these thieves coming to sell their loot to them.
She acknowledged it was hard to resist an offer of R300 for something you will be charged R5000 in the shop, when asked if she bought the Brazilian and Peruvian weaves which the thieves brought.
She said she felt sorry for the victims who have to make an emergency plan to cover the usually old and rugged hair neatly covered under the weaves.
Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu confirmed the police received several reports.
He further said usually the suspects would rob the victims of their jewellery, cellphones and other valuables.
Captain Ndlovu warned the public to be always careful when they pass places where vagrants frequented.
He added that patrols have been stepped up on the hotspots.
